Chocolate cake

Chocolate cake is always a crowd pleaser and this one is so easy to make you’ll find it will soon become your go-to cake recipe.

Stuff you’ll need:

Cake:

  • 2 ½ c plain flour
  • 2 c sugar
  • ½ c cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 c warm water
  • ½ c vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla essence 

Icing:

  • 1 ½ c icing sugar
  • 1 tbsp vegan margarine 
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • water

How to make it: 

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius 
  2. Grease a cake tin with vegetable oil
  3. Sift the first five ingredients together in a mixing bowl, mix well
  4. Add the next four ingredients and whisk to combine
  5. Pour into cake tin and bake for 30 - 40 minutes or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean
  6. While the cake is in the oven, combine the icing sugar, vegan margarine and cocoa powder in a small bowl with a knife for the icing. You may need to add a few drops of water to get a good consistency.
  7. Once baked, transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool. Ice the cake and decorate with grated dark chocolate or nuts.
  • This recipe is very versatile and can be used in many different ways - try halving the cake into layers and spreading the middle with jam and vegan cream or decorate for a children’s (or adults’!) birthday party with sweets, fruit or different coloured icing.
