Becoming vegan

Sometimes it seems like there’s a lot to learn when you first make the decision to explore veganism or vegetarianism.

You’ll probably have questions about plant-based living and why people chose this lifestyle, what you should eat to achieve optimum nutrition, how to approach social situations and a whole range of other topics.

Don’t worry, it’s easy

Plant-based living is becoming more and more popular these days with the number of vegetarians and vegans growing constantly.

People are thinking more about:

  • The role of diet in health and disease prevention
  • Climate change and our impact on the environment
  • Animal welfare and where our food is coming from

This means that people who might not have considered plant-based living before are now more likely to do so. And, as this way of living becomes more mainstream and accepted as a logical and compassionate choice, there will be:

  • More resources available (books, magazines, websites, podcasts, networking groups, festivals and local events)
  • More vegetarian and vegan restaurants to tempt your taste buds
  • More plant-based options at non-veg restaurants
  • Better standardisation of food labels
  • More amazing recipes for tasty vegan food!

This all ultimately makes it easier for you to be kind to yourself, the animals and our planet by going plant-based.

Where do I start?

Making these lifestyle changes should be a fun and rewarding process where you can explore new ideas, new food and make some new friends.

That’s why I’ve put together the resources below. They will take you through the basics of becoming vegetarian or vegan and help make your journey to a plant-based lifestyle easier.

Shout it from the rooftops?

Making the change to a plant-based lifestyle is usually a decision that people feel really good about. It can be life changing! You’ll most probably want to share some of what you’ve learnt and experienced with friends and family.

Striking a balance between coming across as friendly and ‘lecturing’ is key if you have any of these conversations. Some people can be quick to get defensive, especially when something as fundamental as eating is involved.

Check out the sections below to find out how to handle those sticky social situations:
